Plaque with the inscription: CHAPEL ROYAL c1594. Built for King James the 6th to provide an appropriate setting for the baptism of his eldest son, Prince Henry. It replaced an earlier chapel on the same site erected by King James IV and formally approved as the Chapel Royal by the Pope in 1501.
